STM, Cathedral and BR participate in Competitive Mock Trials
The John Sopinka Courthouse was full of young student lawyers on April 6th and 7th at the annual Competitive Mock Trials organized by the Ontario Justice Education Network in cooperation with the Ontario Bar Association. Bishop Ryan, participating for the first time, joined teams from Cathedral and St. Thomas More, last year’s winner. The schools entered the South Central Regional Mock Trial Tournament with nine schools from across Hamilton.
Students from each school had a team of 6-8 students who played the roles of Crown counsel, Defence counsel and the two witnesses in the R v Steems case. Student lawyers from each team were excellent advocates for their respective positions and they worked collaboratively to advance their case, noted teachers Sheri Civitareale, Andrea Leone and Patricia Valeri Tortis.
“It was clear that each student fully embraced this fun and exhilarating learning opportunity.”
St. Thomas More’s Mock Trial Team advanced to the final round of competition against Hamilton Christian District where they “kept their calm, professional demeanour and used their personal advocacy skills to win silver,” said the teachers.
Special thanks to Law teachers Sheri Civitareale (BR), Andrea Leone (STM), and Patricia Valeri Tortis (CHS) who spent many hours helping their teams prepare for the mock trials, and to the student timekeepers who made sure the rules of the mock trial were followed with respect to time.
