At Cathedral High School, peace begins with a smile. Guided by the words of St. Teresa of Calcutta, the Gael Guides have created a warm and welcoming environment for new students entering the school.
On November 23, their efforts were recognized at the Hamilton Convention Centre, by Carmen’s with a 2017 YMCA Peace Medal. Presented by the YMCA of Hamilton, Burlington & Brantford, the award recognizes the achievements of individuals or groups who have made a significant contribution to fostering a culture of peace in the community. Awards are presented annually in the categories of Individual Adult, Individual Youth and Youth Group.
Understanding that a safe and accepting learning environment is critical to student achievement, the Gael Guides, a youth group at Cathedral High School, have worked tirelessly to provide new students and students entering high school with a sense of belonging at their new school. They have created innovative student-driven activities such as fundraisers, awareness campaigns and role modelling, to make the transition to high school a safe, positive and supportive experience for all.
“We are proud of our Gael Guides for their hard work in the school and wish them continued success in their future endeavours,” says Vice-Principal Claudia Defend-Ionico.
