The sixth-seeded Cathedral Gaels won bronze medals at the 2018 OFSAA boys’ AAA high school basketball tournament in Windsor.
In the third-place game Wednesday, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic league champions topped Toronto’s St. Michael’s College Blue Raiders, 72-68.
It was a significant achievement for Cathedral because St. Mike’s came into the 18-team tournament as defending champion. The Blue Raiders were seeded fourth for OFSAA and had rolled to six Ontario Catholic Classic tournament titles in the past seven years.
Cathedral also came close to knocking off another powerhouse squad in the semifinal. Against the 44-0 St. Francis Xavier Tigers of Mississauga, the Gaels lost, 74-66, after taking a 41-36 lead into the second half.
The top-seeded Pine Ridge Pumas of Pickering went on to defeat St. Francis Xavier, 76-72, in the gold-medal match.
It’s the second consecutive year the HWCAA has finished in the top four – the Cardinal Newman Cardinals picked up antique bronze last season.
Cathedral also captured OFSAA bronze in 2015.
