For student-athletes and coaches at Cathedral High School, an artificial turf sports field was just a matter of time.
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board has been installing synthetic turf sports fields at all of its secondary schools, beginning with St. Thomas More in 2011. The final two, at Cathedral and St. Mary, were approved by trustees in June 2017.
Work on the Cathedral field began in earnest this past summer, as this time lapse video shows. The different phases of the project, from field excavation to laying of the synthetic turf carpet, painting of the field markings and spreading of the infill, were captured in more than 180 hours of video.
The field, christened the Thomas J. Gallagher/John J. McPhee Field, was unveiled at a blessing ceremony on September 19th.
“The addition of an artificial turf field to our already great facility promises to enrich the learning environment for all of our students through their physical education classes and all of our extra-curricular teams and clubs,” said Principal Mark Daly.
